Eight Years On, OPay’s Digital Finance Journey Continues to Shape Everyday Life in Nigeria
From emergency cash access and bill payments to business transactions and digital services, OPay marks eight years in Nigeria with stories of how technology has changed everyday financial experiences. When Mrs Saliu Oluwabukola made her first transfer on OPay in 2019, she was simply trying out a service she had encountered on social media. She had no idea that the transaction would mark the beginning of a financial relationship that would eventually extend to airtime purchases, data subscriptions, electricity payments and other everyday needs. “I entered it,” she recalls of that first transaction. She subsequently transferred the money from her OPay account to her commercial bank account and was struck by how quickly the transaction was completed. The experience encouraged her to keep using the platform, gradually turning what began as curiosity into a routine part of her financial life. For Oluwabukola, the value of the service became particularly clear when electricity officials arrived at her property over an unpaid bill. Rather than allow the situation to escalate, she used OPay to settle the bill, forwarded the payment receipt and resolved the issue. What began with a single transfer had become a source of convenience and confidence. “I trust OPay now with any amount,” she says. Her experience is one of several personal stories that have emerged around OPay as the company marks eight years of operations in Nigeria. The stories offer a human perspective on a broader shift in the country's financial landscape, where digital platforms have increasingly become part of how Nigerians transfer money, pay bills, purchase services and conduct business. From a ride to a digital financial experience For Dahiru Haruna of Ojo, OPay first became familiar around 2020, when he was serving as a corps member in Ondo State. At the time, he had heard about ORide, OPay's ride-hailing service, and decided to try it when he travelled back to Lagos. After completing his journey, the payment was deducted through OPay. His reaction was immediate. “Wow, we are progressing. Nigeria is moving with OPay.” The moment, though centred on a simple transport payment, reflected a wider transformation taking place around him. Transactions that had traditionally depended heavily on cash were increasingly being incorporated into digital platforms. Over the years, OPay has expanded beyond payments and transfers to offer a wider range of financial services, including airtime and data purchases, bill payments, cards, savings and merchant-focused solutions. For users, the evolution has meant that several routine financial activities can be managed through a single digital platform. When access to money matters most For Latifat Ajoke Muftau, the significance of digital financial services became particularly apparent during an unexpected emergency. On one occasion, she attempted to withdraw money from an ATM but was debited without receiving the cash. The money was all she had at the time, leaving her stranded and worried about how to access it. A neighbour introduced her to OPay. She downloaded the application, registered with her phone number and was able to receive money shortly after opening her account. “Money just entered. I was like, ah. This is easy.” The experience changed the way she approached her finances. What initially became a means of purchasing data, airtime and making transfers gradually expanded into a wider range of everyday transactions, including subscriptions and other payments. For Muftau, the experience demonstrated the practical meaning of financial access: having an alternative channel through which to receive and manage money when conventional options fail or become inconvenient. Eight years of building in Nigeria OPay's Nigerian journey began in 2018 with the acquisition of Paycom, a Central Bank of Nigeria-licensed Mobile Money Operator. That acquisition provided the foundation for the company's financial services operations in the country. Eight years later, the company says its operations have evolved considerably. OPay now also holds a National MFB licence and has expanded its services across digital payments, transfers, merchant services, cards, savings, security solutions and other financial offerings. The company's evolution has taken place against the backdrop of a Nigerian financial sector undergoing significant digital transformation. Increasing smartphone adoption, changing consumer behaviour and the growth of digital payments have created new opportunities for financial technology companies to provide alternatives to traditional ways of accessing and moving money. For OPay, technology has remained central to that evolution, with the company continuing to invest in its platform, customer support and security as more Nigerians conduct financial transactions digitally. Beyond the transaction The company's activities have also extended beyond financial services. OPay has committed ₦1.2 billion over 10 years to scholarships aimed at supporting young Nigerians with access to education. Its broader social impact initiatives have also included programmes focused on youth development, women's empowerment, skills development and community support. The initiatives form part of a wider effort to position the company's presence in Nigeria beyond the transactions taking place on its platform. At the heart of that presence, however, remain the everyday users whose experiences illustrate the practical role digital financial services can play. There is Oluwabukola, who can settle an electricity bill when officials arrive to disconnect her service. There is Haruna, whose experience with a digital payment during a ride became a moment of optimism about Nigeria's technological progress. And there is Muftau, who found an alternative way to access money after an ATM transaction left her without the cash she needed. Looking ahead Eight years represents a significant period for a technology company operating in a rapidly changing market. During that time, consumer expectations have evolved, digital finance has expanded and new opportunities and challenges have emerged across Nigeria's financial ecosystem. OPay's journey reflects that evolution—from a platform associated primarily with payments and transfers to a broader digital financial services business serving consumers and merchants. The company says its focus remains on using technology to make financial services simpler, more accessible and more inclusive. Behind the statistics and transactions are everyday financial decisions: a student buying data for school, a parent settling a bill, a trader receiving payment from a customer, or a business owner completing a transaction needed to keep operations moving. These individual moments provide a human dimension to the company's eight-year presence in Nigeria. For OPay, the next chapter will build on the same foundation: technology, financial access and the everyday needs of the people who use its services. Eight years after it began operations in Nigeria, the company is still building—and, in the words of its anniversary message, “Eight years on, OPay is still Okay.”
